Recently, it was reported by the Quanzhou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau that the European Union has updated its criteria for issuing environmental labels for textiles and mattress products. This revision has once again brought ecological performance into the spotlight, as manufacturers and exporters must now comply with stricter sustainability requirements. According to the bureau, the new standards apply to all environmental label applications submitted after July 9, 2009, and will remain in effect until July 9, 2013.
As textile exports make up a significant portion of the city’s export volume, officials from the Quanzhou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau have urged local exporters to pay close attention to the changes. The first key update involves the expanded scope of products eligible for environmental labeling. Textiles now include items such as handkerchiefs, scarves, shopping bags, belts, and other clothing accessories, as well as carpets, mats, and other home textiles. Additionally, the category covers fibers, yarns, and fabrics—including durable non-woven materials. For mattress products, the revised standards cover spring mattresses, foam-filled or latex-filled mattresses, and wooden bed frames.
Moreover, each product category must meet specific ecological requirements. For textiles, there are stricter limits on harmful substances used during production, reduced risk of allergic reactions, and enhanced durability against shrinkage and color fading. In the case of mattresses, the regulations impose tighter restrictions on material usage, lower levels of toxic residues, and stricter controls on indoor air pollution caused by the products. The updated standards also encourage the development of more long-lasting and environmentally friendly mattress options.
With these changes, exporters are advised to review their production processes and ensure compliance with the latest EU environmental regulations to maintain market access and competitiveness.
