On September 10, the organizers of the 2011 Spring and Autumn Fashion Designer Series announced that the major exhibitions would be exclusive to retailers and media. As part of the opening ceremony for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, a public fashion show scheduled for September 7 will offer consumers a first look at the latest trends set to hit the market. This event is a key addition to the second edition of "Fashion's Night Out," an initiative launched by Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue. The event encourages people to go out shopping and spend, especially as the U.S. strives to recover from one of its worst economic downturns in recent history.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg highlighted the significance of the event in a press release, stating that the fashion industry is a vital sector in the city. He emphasized that the event not only provides consumers with unique shopping experiences but also supports the local economy during challenging times.
In New York, the fashion industry ranks second only to finance, with over 800 companies employing more than 175,000 people and generating $10 billion in wages annually. Last year’s "Fashionless City" event drew thousands of participants, and this year, retailers are hoping for even greater success as the country continues to navigate through the economic crisis.
According to a survey conducted by Reuters and the University of Michigan, consumer confidence in the U.S. reached a low point in July. Since consumer spending makes up two-thirds of the U.S. economy, any decline in this area could slow down recovery efforts.
The largest public fashion show of "Fashionless City" will feature the latest fall and winter trends selected by Vogue Magazine. With over 1,500 tickets available at a minimum price of $25, the event aims to make high fashion accessible to all. On September 10, nearly 1,000 retailers will stay open until 11 p.m. to encourage shopping and spending.

Fashion designer Marc Jacobs described "Fashionless City" as a true celebration for everyone. At last year’s event, he expressed his joy in seeing people leave their homes and engage with each other on the streets.
The "Fashionless City" event also marks a significant step in the fashion industry, aiming to introduce consumers to the semiannual New York Fashion Week, which is part of the global "Four Fashion Weeks" along with London, Milan, and Paris.
During the New York Fashion Week running from September 9 to 16, the T stage will showcase the upcoming spring and summer trends for next year—six months ahead of what’s currently on store shelves. While most stores are still selling autumn and winter collections, this event gives consumers a sneak peek into what’s coming next.
Anna Wintour stated in a release, “We focus this fashion show on what we believe are the most important trends, ensuring that no matter a consumer’s style or budget, they can find creative inspiration.â€
