K Shetty, co-secretary general of the Central Silk Commission, said that we have set a goal to increase silk production to 32,000 tons by the end of the Twelfth Five-Year Plan. During this four-year period, we proposed to expand the area of ​​silkworm farming by 59,000 hectares, which is 32% more than the current area. At present, India produces 185,000 hectares of silk. Shetty said that expanding production area will help increase silk production from the current 23,000 tons/year to 32,000 tons, an increase of 39%. However, this goal can only be achieved by the end of the 12th Five Year Plan (2016-17).

The Ministry of Textiles has already allocated 1.297 billion rupees for the Central Silk Committee's development activities during the 12th Five-Year Plan, which is a 21% increase over the 105 million rupees allocated during the 11th Five-Year Plan period.

India imports 6,000 tons of silk from China, Japan, Thailand and other countries, valued at more than 20 billion rupees to meet its demand. Shetty said that with the new initiatives, we will increase silk production and reduce dependence on imported silk.
