How to identify ruby

Due to the high market price of rubies, many people have come up with ways to improve the quality of gemstones. The market is full of fake ruby products. The following small series teaches you how to identify rubies.

The identification of rubies can be divided into two steps. The first step is to distinguish ruby from other red stones. The second step is to distinguish the natural products of rubies from artifacts.

There are many substitutes and imitations that are confusing with rubies, including red spinel, red garnet, red tourmaline, red zircon, glass and true and false two-layer stone.

The difference between ruby and other red gems is mainly based on hardness testing. Because the hardness of ruby reaches 8.8 to 9 Mohs, the hardness of other possible substitutes is lower than it. For finished products that have been honed, it can be used to score standard hardness sheets such as topaz and crystal to determine the hardness. According to the hardness, it can be roughly confirmed whether it is ruby.

In addition, it is identified based on the red color of ruby which is rare in other red stones.

One of the methods is to measure the refractive index of the garnet-like magnesia-alumina with a refractive index similar to that of ruby. The refractive index is between 1.74-1.75, which is lower than that of Ruby; sometimes iron-aluminum-magnesium garnet may Mixed with Thai rubies, but the colors are very different. In addition to artificial ruby and red tourmaline, other red varieties have no dichroism. The red tourmaline has similar dichroism to ruby, but under the Chelsea filter, the red tourmaline does not show red fluorescence (note that the red of some red tourmaline is due to the chromium content, see the color filter Fluorescence reaction, but can be distinguished from hardness).

As long as the second layer of stone is carefully observed, it is not difficult to distinguish. That is, remove the ornaments from the support and put them into a bottle filled with water. Look carefully from the waist of the gemstone. Because the two layers of stone are made of two red varieties, the colors are very different and can be easily seen in the water. In addition, the waist was observed with a magnifying glass of 10 times, and the bonding lines and the bubbles in the bonding place were observed. Another reliable method is to measure the refractive index of the upper and lower layers, the difference is the two-layer stone. After distinguishing ruby from other red gems, you can proceed

The second step of the identification work is to identify the ruby natural artifacts.

The method is to first observe carefully with a magnifying glass and find the suspected point. Furthermore, it is inspected by various means and various equipments. Then, in fact, natural products and man-made products can be roughly judged from natural and man-made products by the feeling of seeing at first sight.

If the artifact is very pure, in the case of good transparency, there is a fleeting rose red tone, which is a natural situation that is not easy to appear.

In addition, the surface or shallow part of the ruby raw material or finished product, if there are individual black carbon spots and plaques, are artificial rubies.

In addition, some natural rubies contain white spots and uneven color.

Finally, the six star lines of the artificial starlight ruby are conspicuous, and the star line extends to the lower part of the gemstone, and the surface is visible with natural white fog. However, even if you have seen the truth and the fake, but before you actually buy it, you must use several instruments to check it carefully if you have the conditions. Because people's ability to judge is often influenced by many natural and artificial factors.
